Effect of Islamic Civilization on Modern Science

Effect of Islamic Civilization on Modern Science

12th Century Model of the Solar System
This figure shows a twelfth-century model of the solar system from Baghdad
The one who contemplates the reason modern science and technology have taken giant steps and advanced to the present state would certainly agree that it is due to Islamic civilization which transmitted and introduced vast amounts of knowledge and produced many scholars.
C.H. Haskins7 said: 'The broad fact remains that the Arabs of Spain were the principal source of the new learning for Western Europe.'
They are the ones who placed the fundamentals from which modern civilization advanced. Whoever reviews the 'Dictionary of Technical Terms for Aerospace' 8 would certainly conclude that sixty percent of the known stars are given names that are derived from Arabic.
The books and works of early Muslim scholars were the main resource texts which the West benefited from, especially the Europeans who used these works during the Renaissance period. Many of these texts were used in European universities.
Marquis of Dufferin and Ava said:
'It is to Mussulman science, to Mussulman art, and to Mussulman literature that Europe has been in a great measure indebted for its extrication from the darkness of the Middle Ages.' 9
Illuminating Europ's Dark Ages
Scientific knowledge that originated in India, China and the Hellenistic world was sought out by Muslim scholars and then translated, refined, synthesized and augmented at different centers of learning in the Islamic world from where the knowledge spread to Western Europe. J.H. Denison said:
'In the fifth and sixth centuries the civilized world stood on the verge of a chaos. The old emotional cultures that had made civilization possible, since they had given to men a sense of unity and of reverence for their rulers, had broken down and nothing had been found adequate to take their place. It seemed then the great civilization which it had taken four thousand years to construct was on the verge of disintegration, and that mankind was likely to return to that condition of barbarism where every tribe and sect was against the next, and law and order was unknown. The old tribal sanctions had lost their power. The new sanctions created by Christianity were working division and destruction instead of unity and order. It was a time fraught with tragedy. Civilization, like a gigantic tree whose foliage had overarched the world and whose branches had borne the golden fruits of art and science and literature, stood tottering rotted to the core. Was there any emotional culture that could be brought in to gather mankind once more into unity and to save civilization? It was among these people that the man (Muhammad) was born who was to unite the whole known world of the east and south.10

Muslims had advanced in all technical, scientific and intellectual fields. Here we will mention a few of the outstanding scholars in various fields.
  • Al-Khawarizmi (780-850CE) was a great scholar in the fields of mathematics, algebra, logarithms and geometry. He was perhaps one of the greatest mathematicians who ever lived, as, in fact, he was the founder of several branches and basic concepts of mathematics. He was also the founder of Algebra. Al-Biruni (973-1050AD) was a great scholar in many fields. He wrote on topics ranging from astronomy to mathematics, mathematical geography to mechanics, pharmacology and history.
  • Al-Biruni discussed the theory of the earth rotating on its own axis six hundred years before Galileo!
The German Orientalist E. Sachau said about al-Biruni:
'He was the greatest intellectual known to man.'
As Muslims we say that the greatest intellectual known to man is our Prophet Muhammad.

In the field of medicine and pharmacy, Muslim scholars left behind a wealth of knowledge in their works, which were used to advance modern day medicine. Among these scholars were:
  • Ibn Rushd (Averroes 1126-1198 CE) was an Andalusian philosopher and physician, a master of philosophy and Islamic law, mathematics and medicine.
  • Ibn an-Nafees (1213-1288 CE) was a physician who is mostly famous for being the first to describe the pulmonary circulation of the blood. He discovered blood circulation before the Englishman Harvey and the Spaniard Michael Servetus by hundreds of years.
  • Am'maar b. Ali al-Mo'sili b. Eesa al-Kah'haal was highly skilled in ophthalmology. He invented specialized instruments used in operations, such as the "injection syringe", a hollow needle.
  • Al-Hasan b. al-Haitham (Alhazen 965- 1040AH) was a great mathematician. He was a pioneer in optics, engineering and astronomy. According to Giambattista della Porta, Al-Hasan was the first to explain the apparent increase in the size of the moon and sun when near the horizon. His seven volume treatise on optics Kitab al- Manadhir (Book of Optics) is possibly the earliest work to use the scientific method. He used the results of experiments to test theories.
  • Al-Mansoori and Abu Bakr ar-Razi were renowned, versatile physicians. They made fundamental and enduring contributions to the fields of medicine and philosophy.
  • medicine extraction
Process of medicine extraction- An image taken from a book of an ancient pharmacist
  • Muwaf'faq al-Baghdadi and Abul-Qasim az-Zahrawi were renowned in dental practices. They wrote books concerning this, and put illustrative pictures of the tools used in surgical operations and how to use the tools.
In the field of geography and geology many notable scholars can be mentioned, among whom are:
  • Shareef al-Idrisi (1100-1165H) was a cartographer, geographer and traveler. He was renowned for his excellent maps of the world. He also invented navigational instruments. There are many Muslim scholars who participated and took part in advancing civilization. Whoever wants to know more, should review books that are written specifically on this topic. Numerous times, researches written by Muslims were plagiarized and wrongfully attributed to others.
Major Arthur Glyn Leonard said:
Do not we, who now consider ourselves on the topmost pinnacle ever reached by culture and civilization, recognize that, had it not been for the high culture, the civilization and intellectual, as the social splendors of the Arabs and soundness of their system, Europe would to this day have remained sunk in the darkness of ignorance?11

The Virtues of Islamic Civilization

  • Seeking knowledge is a religious duty, which Islam encourages Muslims to fulfill.
  • Muslim scholars in the past used their knowledge to strengthen people's belief in contrast to the scholars of this age, who use their knowledge to weaken people's belief.
  • Muslim scholars in the past used their knowledge to serve mankind, in contrast to most of the scholars today who use their knowledge for exploitive and selfish ends. Scientists during this era invented the atom and hydrogen bomb and other weapons of mass destruction; thereafter they prevented others from owning these weapons, in an attempt to control and exploit the riches of the world.
  • Muslim scholars of the past spread their knowledge so that people could benefit from it, in contrast to the scholars of today who withhold knowledge for themselves or for their own country and prevent others from accessing it.
  • Muslim scholars of the past aimed to attain the mercy of Allah and His reward, in contrast to the scholars of today who try their best to benefit materialistically from their discoveries.

?What is the Quran

The Quran is the constitution of the Muslims from which they derive the teachings which organize both their religious and everyday affairs. It differs from the previous Divine Books in the following ways:
  • It is the last Divine Book which was revealed, and for that reason, Allah, the Exalted, promised to protect it from any distortion until the Last Day.
    Allah says:
(Indeed, it is We who have sent down this Reminder [i.e., the Quran] and indeed, it is We who are its Guardian. ) (15:9)
  • The Quran includes all the legislations which reform society and guarantees happiness for all in its implementation.
  • The Quran has documented the stories of the Prophets and Messengers, and what happened between them and their peoples, from Adam till Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention.
  • It was revealed to all of mankind so that they would live a life of peace and happiness, and to take them out of darkness and bring them into the light.
  • Reciting, memorizing and teaching it are acts of worship.

?What Do They Say About the Quran

Maurice Bucaille said in his Book:
The Quran, and Modern Science: 'A totally objective examination of it [the Quran] in the light of modern knowledge, leads us to recognize the agreement between the two, as has been already noted on repeated occasions.
It makes us deem it quite unthinkable for a man of Muhammad's time to have been the author of such statements, on account of the state of knowledge in his day. Such considerations are part of what gives the Quranic Revelation its unique place, and forces the impartial scientist to admit his inability to provide an explanation which calls solely upon materialistic reasoning.'

?What is Islam

Islam is to submit to Allah in His Oneness (Monotheism) to be subservient to Him in obedience, and to shun associating any partners, rivals, and intercessors with Him. It is a religion of tolerance and ease.
Allah says:
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.(2:185)
Islam is a religion through which one would be spiritually contented and would have peace of heart.
Allah says:
Those who believe, and whose hearts find their rest in the remembrance of Allah - for, verily, in the remembrance of Allah hearts do find their rest. (13:28)
Islam is a religion of mercy and compassion. The Messenger of Allah said:
"The All-Merciful shows mercy to those who show mercy. Show mercy to those on Earth, and you will be shown mercy by the One above the heavens." (Tirmidhi)
Islam is a religion of love and loving good for others. The Messenger of Allah said:
"The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others." (Tabaraani)
Islam is a religion which has no confusion or ambiguity associated with it. Allah says:
"And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message [i.e. former scriptures] if you do not know." (16:43)
Islam is a religion for all, for it is a call directed to mankind at large, not to a specific race or people. Allah says:
And We have not sent you except to all of humanity, as a herald of glad tidings and a warner. But most of the people do not know. (34:28)
Islam is a religion which effaces all previous sins. The Prophet said:
"Islam effaces all (sins) committed before it." (Muslim)
Islam is a complete and perfect religion which abrogated all revelations, and it is the last religion. Allah says:

Door of the Kabah
The Door of the 'Kabah'. It is made from pure gold in reverence of the Kabah. It is only opened once a year, when it is washed before Hajj, and when it is covered with a new 'Kiswah' (covering)
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. (5:3)
Islam comprises a number of acts of worship, among which are verbal, physical and creedal acts of worship.
These acts of worship play an important role in refining one's manners, purifying one's soul, reforming an individual, and maintaining the integrity and unity of Muslim society.

What do they say about Islam?

W. Montgomery Watt in his book: 'What is Islam?' said: 'Prejudice is only one of the difficulties to be met by the European or American student of Islam. As soon as he begins to describe Islam as 'the religion of the Quran', or 'the religion of the four hundred million Muslims of today', he introduces a category which does not fit, the category of 'religion'.
For what does 'religion' now mean to the occidental? At best, for the ordinary man, it means a way of spending an hour or so on Sundays in practices which give him some support and strength in dealing with the problems of daily life, and which encourages him to be friendly towards other persons and to maintain the standards of sexual propriety; it has little or nothing to do with commerce or economics or politics or industrial relationships. At worst it fosters an attitude of complacency in the more prosperous individuals and breeds smugness.
The European may even look at religion as an opiate developed by exploiters of the common people in order to keep them in subjection. How different from the connotations to the Muslim of the verse (3:19): 'the true religion with God is Islam!' The word translated as 'religion' is Deen, which, in Arabic, commonly refers to a whole way of life.
It is not a private matter for individuals, touching only the periphery of their lives, but something which is both private and public, something which permeates the whole fabric of society in a way of which men are conscious. It is all in one theological dogma, forms of worship, political theory, and a detailed code of conduct, including even matters which the European would classify as hygiene or etiquette.

How we should receive Ramadhaan - I

How we should receive Ramadhaan - I

People have various ideas and ways of receiving the blessed month of Ramadhaan and invest this occasion in fulfilling their favorite actions and activities. Some of them make this an occasion for laziness, idleness, sleep and neglecting the different acts of obedience that they could otherwise be doing. Others find this a good opportunity for watching shows on satellite television while others stay up late at night and use this precious time to pay visits, go to markets, relax, make trips and the like while others make it an occasion for exaggeration in eating, drinking and doing whatever they like, as if Ramadhaan is the month of food and drink, and not the month of fasting.
However, there are some other people for whom Allaah The Almighty wants good for and thus guides them to the right way so that they became able to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong. Such people receive this blessed month warmly and happily since they believe that it is a golden opportunity to attain forgiveness for sins and make a new start that would be sin-free. In fact, the blessed month of Ramadhaan is the month of forgiveness, mercy and emancipation from Hell. The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), used to give his Companions glad tidings on the arrival of Ramadhaan saying: “There has come to you Ramadhaan, a blessed month which Allaah has enjoined you to fast, during which the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the rebellious devils are chained up. In it there is a night which is better than a thousand months - whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.” [An-Nasaa’i, Al-Albaani: Saheeh (Authentic)]

Consequently, these people knew well the virtues, rewards and goodness of this blessed month and thus they decide to reap all these fruits and benefits so that they may not be among those who will say [what Allaah The Almighty Says (which means)]: {I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life.}[Quran 89: 24] or say [what Allaah The Almighty Says (which means)]: {My Lord, send me back, that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.} [Quran 23:99-100] They do not wish to be among those who will regret their negligence at a time when regret will be of no use.

Therefore, those people whom Allaah has guided to receive the blessed month of Ramadhaan properly, are determined to do the following:

1.     Sincere Repentance

Repentance of sins is obligatory at all times, especially in the month of Ramadhaan. If a person does not repent in Ramadhaan, then when would he repent? If one does not feel regret in Ramadhaan, then when would he feel regret? Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And turn to Allaah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.} [Quran 24:31]

O you who delay His repentance, until when will you postpone it?

You told yourself: When I observe fast in Ramadhaan, I will repent. Well, here are the days of the blessed month of Ramadhaan fast approaching, yet you still refuse to turn to your Lord in repentance. You are turning away from Him, not coming closer to Him. You still insist resolutely on your disobedience. Do you not fear that the Angel of Death may come to you while you are in such a state? How could you be guided to the path of repentance while you firmly insist on going in the opposite direction?

Allaah The Almighty forgives all sins: He spreads out His Hand at night to accept the repentance of the one who has sinned during the day, and He spreads out His Hand by day to accept the repentance of the one who has sinned during the night. Allaah The Almighty rejoices over those who turn to Him in repentance and over the regret of the sinful people. Therefore, He opens a door from the direction of the west for seventy years for the purpose of repentance, and it will not be closed until the sun rises from the west as the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said. [Ahmad and At-Tirmithi]

So where are those who long to turn to Allaah The Almighty in repentance?

2.     Receiving Ramadhaan by devoting all actions sincerely and solely to Allaah The Almighty

One concept should be very clear to all from the onset: If your acts lack sincerity, then do not bother exhausting yourself because no action will be accepted without sincerity. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):{So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.}[Quran 18: 110] It was narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “Allaah The Almighty Says: ‘I am so self-sufficient that I am in no need of having an associate. Thus whoever does an action for someone else’s sake as well as mine, I will leave him to whom he has associated with Me.’”[Muslim]

Fasting is one of the greatest acts of worship that instill sincerity in the heart of the Muslim. This is because the fasting person cannot be known except by Allaah The Almighty, The Most Exalted, especially if he observes fasting in days other than the days of Ramadhaan and even in Ramadhaan, for one can pretend that he is fasting while he is not. In addition to this, the fasting person keeps away from the slightest thing that can affect his fasting out of sincerity to Allaah The Almighty and seeking His pleasure. Therefore, Allaah The Almighty has hidden the reward of fasting and made it for Himself in much the same way as the fasting person has hidden his fasting from other people, and of course Allaah The Almighty only gives that which is bountiful and plentiful. Allaah The Almighty says in a Qudsi (Sacred) Hadeeth: {Every deed of the son of Aadam (Adam) will be rewarded between ten and seven hundred fold, except fasting, for it is for Me and I shall reward it Myself.}[Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

3.     Receiving Ramadhaan by adhering strictly to the Sunnah of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )

No act can be accepted unless it meets two conditions: that it is accompanied by a sincere intention, which is that one should do it only for the sake of Allaah The Almighty, and in that it is in accordance with the guidance of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

The verse mentioned above refers to both of these conditions.

*{So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work} refers to following the guidance of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), and
*{And not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.}[Quran 18: 110] refers to a sincere intention.

Indeed the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), clarified everything about the matter of fasting such as when to start and stop fasting, its pillars, its obligations, its recommended acts, its manners, its virtues and its benefits, things that break the fast, what cannot affect the fast, excuses that allow one to break the fast, and everything else that is related to the fast.

4.     Receiving Ramadhaan with patience

In fact, Ramadhaan is the month of patience and forbearance. In it, one abstains from some of his usual habits, food, drink, sexual intercourse and anything else that would break the fast as a form of obedience to Allaah The Almighty and worship that brings one closer to Him.

Patience is one of the most difficult things for the soul. Therefore, patience represents half of faith and the patient will be given an immense reward as Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.} [Quran 39: 10]

Patience is of three types:
1-    Patience concerning the obligations (required by Allaah The Almighty) that one should fulfill;
2-    Patience in abstaining from actions forbidden by Him, that one should not do;
3-    Patience concerning afflictions, that one should not resent or complain of his Lord to.
One should have all three of these.

There are many reasons why one should observe patience, including:

1-    Love for Allaah The Almighty.
2-    Fear of Allaah The Almighty.
3-    Nobility and purity of the soul.
5-    Avoiding excess in food, drink, clothing, sex, and mixing with people.
6-    Feeling shy and embarrassed before Allaah The Almighty.
7-    Remembering the blessings that Allaah The Almighty has given as well as his kindness.
8-    Acknowledging the evil and dire consequences of disobedience.
9-    Certain knowledge of the consequences of disobedience and the harm that may result from it.
10-     Knowledge of the good consequences and rewards of obeying Allaah The Almighty .
11-     Faith that is firmly-rooted in the heart.

If one pays attention and adheres to these factors, then they will be the finest help for him in fulfilling acts of obedience and refraining from doing sinful acts, particularly, in this month of fasting that entails exerting oneself in doing many righteous acts and keeping away from committing sins.

Valentine's Day: Vice Disguised as Virtue-II

Where is the love which they talk about and allocate a festival for, while their reality is completely different?
Western studies and statistics reveal the following:
• An American study conducted in 1407 A.H./1987 CE, states that 79 percent of men physically abuse their womenfolk, especially if they are married. (Al-Qabas Newspaper, 15/2/1988.)
• A study carried out by the National American Office for Mental Health states the following:
- 17 percent of women who go to emergency rooms are victims of physical abuse at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends.
- 83 percent of women who have been admitted to hospital at least once for treatment of injuries, were admitted as a result of beating.
The study added that a large number of abused women do not go to the hospital for treatment, but deal with their injuries at home.
• In a report of the Central American Agency for Examination (FPT) it states that every 18 seconds there is a woman who is beaten by her husband somewhere in America.
• The American magazine Time stated that around 4,000 wives out of approximately 6 million who are beaten die as a result of that beating.
• A German study states that no less than 100,000 women annually are subjected to acts of physical or psychological abuse on the part of their husbands or the men they live with. The real figure may exceed one million.
• In France, approximately 2 million women face physical abuse.
• In Britain, in an opinion poll in which 7,000 women took part, 28 percent of them said that they had been subjected to physical attacks by their husbands and boyfriends.
What is the Muslim's obligation towards these deviations?
First: Asserting the principle of Walaa’ and Baraa’ (allegiance to Muslims and disassociation from disbelievers), adhering to its requirements and warning against imitating the People of the Book in their appearance, festivals and commemorations.
Second: Warning against rallying behind attractive slogans, false claims and deceptive appearances, which in fact aim at luring Muslims to indulge in widespread corruption.
Third: We appeal to those who are responsible for the press and media, audio and visual, to stop presenting movies and television series that make love between boys and girls appear attractive, and depict love as something necessary for a successful marriage. Such things firmly establish illusions and fantasies in the minds of young girls that make them prone to error and easy prey for foolish and lost youth.
Besides, such things destroy the community by arousing temptation and desires among its members and raising divorce rates. For instance, a girl may think after marriage that her marriage has failed because she stops experiencing "intense" feelings of love, when the reality of marriage appears and the marital responsibilities increase.
Likewise, a youth who finds his wife busy with her home and children may think that she no longer shows the old emotions and feelings of love that she showed in the early days of their alliance, and may feel that his marriage has failed. Thereafter, disputes arise for trivial reasons, differences worsen and discord rages to end with divorce.
Fourth: We appeal to shop owners and Muslim traders not to be driven by their eagerness to gain a perishable quick earning by sharing the activities of non-Muslims and helping them by selling the things they require for such occasions. Shaykh-ul-Islam, Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him said, "When a Muslim sells food, drink or clothes to the non-Muslims during their festivals, this is prohibited because this is a form of help that could lead to making a display of their false religion and gathering people for their festivals. This is greater than helping a specific person." [Adapted from Al-Iqtidhaa']
It is prohibited for the Muslim to even sell these things to the People of the Book, so that they use them to display the rituals of their religion. Then, what will be the ruling when such things are sold to a Muslim who is originally commanded not to imitate them?
Fatwa of Shaykh ‘Abdullaah ibn Jibreen, may Allaah have mercy upon him, regarding the ruling of celebrating this day
He was asked,
The celebration of the so-called "love festival" or Valentine’s Day has become widespread among our boys and girls. Valentine is the name of a saint who is venerated by the Christians, and this day is celebrated every year on February 14. They exchange gifts and red roses, and they wear red clothes. What is the ruling on celebrating this day or exchanging gifts on this day? May Allaah reward you.
He answered,
First: It is not permissible to celebrate such innovated festivals, because this is a newly-invented matter in religion which has no basis in Sharee‘ah (Islamic legislation). So, it is included in the Hadeeth (narration) of ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her who said that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Whoever introduces something new in this matter of ours (i.e. religion) that does not originally belong to it, will have it rejected." It means that it will be thrown back upon the one who innovated it.
Second: This involves imitating and resembling the non-Muslims in venerating that which they venerate and respecting their festivals and holidays, and imitating them in some of their religious practices. The Hadeeth states: "Whoever imitates a people becomes one of them."
Third: The things that result from this, such as partying, idle play, singing, music, insolence, impertinence, unveiling, neglecting the Hijaab (Islamic covering), intermixing between the two sexes, and the appearance of women before non-Mahram (marriageable) men, and so on, are all prohibited, or are means which lead to immorality. So, it should not be justified as an excuse for relaxation and entertainment, or be claimed that they will not overstep the mark, because that is not right. The one who cares about himself should keep away from sin and all that leads to it. On this basis, it is not permissible to sell these gifts and roses if one knows that the purchaser will celebrate these holidays, give them as gifts or otherwise use them to honor these days, so that the vendor will not be sharing in the guilt of the one who does this innovated action. And Allaah knows best.
Dear Muslims, are ‘Eed Al-Adh’ha and ‘Eed Al-Fitr not enough for you? Is not your religion the religion of happiness and guidance? Beware of these festivals which are based on innovation in religion and disbelief. Beware and warn others. Be proud of your religion. Be distinguished from the deviant people. Avoid following their traces or being influenced by their ideas. You are nobler in the sight of Allaah The Almighty than this.
